A Day Around Rocamadour and the Padirac Chasm

We are actually in the next town, but the internet has not improved much. It actually takes 7 minuets to upload a photo, but here goes, , ,

The plan for today was to head out for a loop around the region. The point of interest was this HUGE hole in the ground. A massive sink hole That had been turned into a tourist attraction around 120 years ago.
The Padriac Chasm is 338 feet deep where a underground river becomes deep enough to have boats take tourists to a section of huge limestone rooms. Truly amazing, a spot that no one will forget. The presentation was first class. Funny note: When our group got into the boats, without cue, everyone started < "Its a small world" Remembering the Disney boat ride. ...

The opening is 325' across. to enter the chasm you need to got through a building that was part of the huge generators used for lighting the underground. We were told that long before homes had electric lighting, the chasm was lit. People would pay just to see the lighting and electric light bulbs in action!
Entering, you pay for tickets and head to ether a stair way, or elevators.

Once at the bottom to head for the long cave shaft the brings you to the boats, looking up and around is amazing how all this had been here for years and simply caved in to revile a massive space. We were told that when the first explorers came, the bottom was filled with anamal bones and junk the for years had been used as a dump.

Plants growing at the bottom of the Chasm with very limited light!

Roadside plums. You never go too far at this time of year without seeing free fruit or nuts.

Candle lighting in the churchs and chapels is one of the things we love to do when in France.
